As parents we sometimes forget the little things can really set off our children. Whether it be a song they don’t like, the blowing of a nose or a necklace that scares them (yes, these have all happened), but today it was Daddy. Mummy cut Daddy’s hair last night and Oliver didn’t like it.
A long overdue hair cut
Nathans hair was long overdue a cut – life get’s in the way, ya know? He’s given me the job of being his hair dresser now, so after lots of ‘we’ll do it tonight’ and then forgetting, it finally got to last night when Nathan got the clippers out and said, ‘let’s do it now’. Oliver was tucked up in bed so we didn’t think anything of it, so I cut his hair. He then had a shave, just to add to Daddy looking completely different.
We tidied up, did other bits and bobs, then went to bed, as you do. To us it was just one of those evenings, we had no idea how much of an impact it would make on Oliver – It’s just a hair cut at the end of the day!
The next morning
We had another bad night with Oliver, so after trying to settle him down about 5 times we decided to bring him into our bed. It was so dark Oliver obviously didn’t know Daddy looked different. It was only until 6am when Oliver woke up again that he realised.
The first thought in Olivers head must have been ‘Who the hell is in bed with Mummy?!’. He screamed, waking us up, and then scrambled over to me with tears streaming down his face. I had literally no idea what was going on! I thought ‘Is he hurt?’, ‘Is he ill?’, ‘Did he have a nightmare?’. His head was buried into my lap crying his eyes out with a tight grip around me.
It was only until I stood up with him when the tears slowed down. We were facing away from the bed towards the curtains and he seemed to be calmer. I then sat on the edge of the bed and the crying started again. This is when I noticed Oliver hiding behind me, away from Daddy, and then it clicked. ‘You’ve had a hair cut and your beard is gone. It’s you!’.
He was scared of Daddy!
Luckily Nathan thought nothing of it. He knew it was just one of those things. After a lot of talking Oliver soon realised it was Daddy. I can’t imagine the thoughts running through his head at that point, bless him. Did he really think I had a strange man in the bed with me?? I can’t help but laugh a little, but I did feel bad for him. I’ll admit I loved having all of the love and attention for that brief 10 minutes!
It’s crazy to think just a hair cut can make such a huge impact on a little toddlers mind. I once wore a necklace that he decided he didn’t like, so refused to be held by me – that one was a hard one to figure out!
What little things have set your children off? I’d love to hear your stories! Next time we probably won’t leave his hair cut so long, just so it’s not a drastic change!!
