A Cold And Windy Day At Southwold

Over the past year we’ve been to the coast a lot more in the winter than in the summer. I really don’t know why that is! I love the beach in the summer, but going to the coast in the winter is so nice and calming. There are less people around so I feel much more relaxed, especially with Oliver running around. We went to Southwold at the weekend as it had been a while since our last family day out together which you can read about here. It took us about an hour to get to so, again, not too far away from us. We’ve been wanting to visit Southwold for ages, so what better time to do so when its grey, cold and windy!

Southwold Pier

It was a lot busier than I thought it would be. The pier seemed quite busy but it’s understandable as there is a lot going on. There are the arcades, lots of cute shops and a cafe. I can imagine in the summer it’ll be a really popular place to visit! We pushed Oliver in his buggy until we reached the end of the pier where there was a big open space. It was perfect for Oliver to have a run around so we popped him down and, of course, off he went!

I must admit I am in love with his grey snowsuit. I kind of want a matching one for myself as it looks rather cozy! This was Oliver’s first outing in his snowsuit and I think he liked it!

There are some amazing art pieces to look at whilst walking along the pier. I love seeing the little added details as it makes the pier stand out. I also fell in love with the names and signs of the shops on the pier.

Half way up the pier there are some of those wacky mirrors that were very popular – all the kids were obsessed with them! Oliver was a bit too short to see the effect of them but he did spot himself and starting having a chat with his reflection!

The Beautiful View

Now I love getting to the end of the pier just so you can look back at the town, and I must say Southwold looked beautiful. You can see the lighthouse in the distance and all of the colourful beach huts. It was very cold and windy at the end though so we didn’t stay for long. I did manage to get a few photos!

Walking Along The Coast

We went for a tiny walk along the coast line – Oliver was starting to get a bit irritable and it was SO cold. I can imagine in the summer it would be a gorgeous walk to do. No doubt we’ll come back again during the hotter months. I still managed to snap a few photos of Oliver. One of his favourite things to do at the moment is play ‘Peekaboo’, or as we call it ‘Where’s Oliver?!’. He stopped randomly in the middle of the path and hid behind his hands. God I love this kid so much!

He always likes to find a rock to take home!

Although we didn’t spend long there, it was a really nice day out. On the way back we found a lovely little farm shop and cafe which I was desperate to stop off at. We picked up a few bits and bobs, and had a hot drink and a cheese scone in the cafe. It was a lovely way to end a day out.

I’m looking forward to visiting Southwold again in the summer. Hopefully next time we’ll be able to spend a little longer there so we can walk up the high street, as it looked really nice with some small independent shops. Have you ever visited Southwold before? If you haven’t I’d highly recommend it for a nice family day out.

  1. I actually think that the last time I went to a beach was in winter as well! I haven’t been to Southwold in years although it looks like you and the family had a wonderful time! Oliver is just too cute in that snow suit, I’m not surprised that you want a matching one for yourself as it does look really cosy! View with the lighthouse and beach huts really is stunning, I always miss the East of England when I’m away from home!
