You Know You’re A Parent When…

We’ve been parents for nearly 16 months now and things have changed, a lot. I know, it’s such a cliché thing for a parent to say. I just didn’t realise HOW much our lives would change when Oliver arrived. The past year we’ve noticed some funny things start to happen with us. You really know when you’ve become a parent! Here’s a list of funny things that make me realise that I’m most definitely a parent.

1. You start to worry about the weirdest things.

The other night at around 1am, I suddenly sat up and asked my husband ‘When was the last time Oliver had a poo?!’. Yup, I woke up in the middle of the night for THAT. You start to worry about the weirdest things that you would have never of worried about before.

2. When 2 become 1.

I hope someone else read that as if they were a member of the Spice Girls… Just me?! You’ll start to feel like you’re little one is around you so much that you’ll both start to become one person. Following on from that…..

3. Privacy does not exist in the bathroom.

Oh no, there’s no privacy in the bathroom. I’m very lucky if I have a chance to run to the bathroom alone. Usually I’ll have a little boy running around in our bathroom when I’m on the toilet or having a shower. When my husband get’s home from work I’m ashamed to say I’m excited for having a private trip to the bathroom!

4. You haven’t had lunch.

This doesn’t happen too often now, only on the days when Oliver is being a bit… needy. I used to be able to make Oliver’s lunch, sit by him when he eats it and then get on with our day. I’d soon realise I never made lunch for myself!

5. You can’t remember the last full nights sleep you had.

The main thing you’ll hear us parents talking about – lack of sleep. There always seems to be something that’ll stop us from having a full nights sleep; Oliver waking up during the night, waking up too early, us going to bed too late (our fault obviously, but we enjoy the peace and quiet!)… Recently Oliver has been waking up around 4/5am which is way too early for me to function! We just bring him into our bed and sleep a little more.

6. You start singing Cbeebies songs, even when your child is in bed.

This happens to us ALL the time. The songs are just too darn catchy! If our TV is on, it’ll be on Cbeebies. You start to learn the songs and you start singing along to them during the day. Nathan’s favourite to sing is Andy’s Prehistoric Adventures and Pablo. Mine are Iggle Piggles theme song or the Friends song from Mr Tumble: Something Special.

7. You get to eat plenty of leftovers.

Although you may not get time to make your own lunch, there’s a chance you’ll be getting some leftovers from your child.

Of course, as I always say, I wouldn’t have it any other way. We love singing Cbeebies songs and laughing about the weird things we think of. What are some weird things that make you realise you’re a parent? Let me know in the comments!

Haha I love this! We sing the Hey Duggee theme a lot. I think finding bits of dried, stale food everywhere is a big one, and I totally agree with the toilet thing!
    Ah sleep… I miss sleep.
    Hels xx
