Being under the weather and a mum is tough, as you can’t really call in sick. This week I’ve felt pretty rubbish. I’ve got a horrible cold which I (probably) caught from my parents when they came home from holiday. Thanks Mum and Dad! Today has been one of those days where I would have wanted to call in sick. My son needs me though so unfortunately that wasn’t an option. I’m just having to power through the week and pray it buggers off soon!
All I’ve wanted to do is curl up into a ball in bed and sleep, but seeing as I can’t really do that with Oliver around I’ve had to actually look after myself, which obviously is going to do me the world of good.
Drink plenty of fluids
The one you hear all the time when your ill. I struggle to drink enough anyway let alone when I’m not feeling too great. I’ve been drinking a lot more this week and I feel more awake and have more energy. Maybe I should do this more often?
First thing in the morning fill a bottle/jug up with your favourite drink and have it near you at all times. That way you’re not having to go backwards and forwards into your kitchen whilst keeping an eye on your child/children. When I remember I use my ‘more water bottle’ that tells me how much I should be drinking at what time.
Get some fresh air
Although you may not have a lot of energy you should take a short walk outside. You’ll get some fresh air but it’ll also occupy your child/children for a while. I’ve not been able to do that today due to the constant rain we’ve been getting annoyingly!
At times like these I can never be bothered to cook and today is not an exception. We’ve just had a takeaway and although it’s not the healthiest option, it makes you feel good temporarily. This doesn’t even need to be a takeaway! Just treat yourself to something, whether it’s a cake, a dessert or a hot chocolate. It’s nice to have that moment of feeling good! Why not make yourself some M&M Blondies?
Take a little time out
I know it’s hard to take time out as a mum, but when I’m having really hard days even 5 minutes to myself is a blessing. I sometimes pop my son, Oliver, into his cot with lots of toys and then I go and have a quick rest. I used to think this was such a horrible thing to do but it really isn’t. If anything I think Oliver loves it! I can hear him playing with his toys and giggling to himself.
Take appropriate tablets
Make sure you have cold and flu tablets or painkillers in your house (obviously out of reach for children). These will obviously help any pains/aches and should hopefully speed up your recovery time!
Remember you will feel better and you’ll be back to yourself in no time. Just keep looking after yourself.
Obviously these tips will work for anyone who is ill. It’s always important to take care of yourself when you’re under the weather so you’re feeling better as soon as possible. Have you got anything you like to do when you’re not feeling great? Send them my way!
