Tips For An Under The Weather Mum

Being under the weather and a mum is tough, as you can’t really call in sick. This week I’ve felt pretty rubbish. I’ve got a horrible cold which I (probably) caught from my parents when they came home from holiday. Thanks Mum and Dad! Today has been one of those days where I would have wanted to call in sick. My son needs me though so unfortunately that wasn’t an option. I’m just having to power through the week and pray it buggers off soon!

Bedside Table With Coffee - Tips for an under the weather mum

All I’ve wanted to do is curl up into a ball in bed and sleep, but seeing as I can’t really do that with Oliver around I’ve had to actually look after myself, which obviously is going to do me the world of good.

Drink plenty of fluids

The one you hear all the time when your ill. I struggle to drink enough anyway let alone when I’m not feeling too great. I’ve been drinking a lot more this week and I feel more awake and have more energy. Maybe I should do this more often?

First thing in the morning fill a bottle/jug up with your favourite drink and have it near you at all times. That way you’re not having to go backwards and forwards into your kitchen whilst keeping an eye on your child/children. When I remember I use my ‘more water bottle’ that tells me how much I should be drinking at what time.

Get some fresh air

Although you may not have a lot of energy you should take a short walk outside. You’ll get some fresh air but it’ll also occupy your child/children for a while. I’ve not been able to do that today due to the constant rain we’ve been getting annoyingly!

Treat yourself

At times like these I can never be bothered to cook and today is not an exception. We’ve just had a takeaway and although it’s not the healthiest option, it makes you feel good temporarily. This doesn’t even need to be a takeaway! Just treat yourself to something, whether it’s a cake, a dessert or a hot chocolate. It’s nice to have that moment of feeling good! Why not make yourself some M&M Blondies?

Take a little time out

I know it’s hard to take time out as a mum, but when I’m having really hard days even 5 minutes to myself is a blessing. I sometimes pop my son, Oliver, into his cot with lots of toys and then I go and have a quick rest. I used to think this was such a horrible thing to do but it really isn’t. If anything I think Oliver loves it! I can hear him playing with his toys and giggling to himself.

Take appropriate tablets

Make sure you have cold and flu tablets or painkillers in your house (obviously out of reach for children). These will obviously help any pains/aches and should hopefully speed up your recovery time!

Remain positive

Remember you will feel better and you’ll be back to yourself in no time. Just keep looking after yourself.

Obviously these tips will work for anyone who is ill. It’s always important to take care of yourself when you’re under the weather so you’re feeling better as soon as possible. Have you got anything you like to do when you’re not feeling great? Send them my way!

whenever I feel rough I just take it easy, movies and sometimes walk to get some chocolate with a takeout at the end of the day, no stress and no clean up.. i however wish I could do what my husband and mum do when they get sick and hide in the bedroom and sleep!! 😛

Great tips! I need to remember to bring a lot of water when I go lay down because I often won’t feel like getting up to get more and then I’ll get dehydrated

It really sucks when they are little and depend on you so much and when you’re sick it feels like you’re trudging through mud at the tiniest of tasks. It will get better when he gets older though. My boys are 15 and 10 and the other day I had a horrible migraine. It was the first one I had in years. I was in so much pain I felt sick and could barely move. My boys looked after me, covering me up with a blanket, making me some hot chocolate and constantly checking on me to make sure I was okay. When I finally broke down and went to the store to pick up medicine, my youngest was very attentive and even went to bed by himself (something that is usually a struggle) because he knew I needed to go to bed but as a mom I need to make sure he goes to bed at a decent time too. I love your tips! Especially about the fluids and taking at least 5 minutes for yourself. It’s so important:) #stayclassymama

Treat yourself and remaining positive are two things I need to remember to do!! It’s so so so hard being a mum and being sick I struggle as the cold usually gets passed around the family so either myself or my partner have to take a day off work to take care of our son…which means we typically have to go into work sick! It’s a nightmare I hope you feel better soon! Thanks so much for sharing with #StayClassyMama
